Moosapet had been named after Musa khan a warrior from Afghanistan. he was a kabahali pathan (traditional Tribal pathan) In the 1800 Mir Mahbub ali khan visited Palamuru now Mahbubnagar had titled the town Palamuru to Mahbubnagar and appeased by Mr Musakhan and also titled him As MAHBUB ALI KHAN. So this hamlet was named after him.

Another popular theory suggests that Murtuza Khan, the founder of the hamlet, named it MOOSAKHAN-PETA after his elder brother with whom he migrated from Kabul. They possessed considerable strength, wealth and were on business expedition in Hyderabad Deccan region. They followed Pashtunwali an ancient self-governing tribal system that regulates nearly all aspects of Pashtun life ranging from community to personal level. Even a mere taunt counts as an insult which can be redressed by some penalty. During their journey they had a pit stop at Musafirkhana (travelers rest house), where Moosa Khan left alone his younger brother due to rift between them regarding feeding their horses, whereas Moosa khan continued his journey without his brother, Murtuza khan kept waiting for his brother to return back to the same place he was left alone by Moosa khan. Months passed away waiting for his brother, Murtuza khan bought a house and some cultivable land around Musafirkhana, married women from a local tribe to cement alliance with them. No Scripts exist that provide number and name of sons he had. Years passed and Murtuza rose to power due to his status, wealth and became tribal chief.

Murtuza khan's descendant great grandson MAHBUB KHAN was patwari (tax collector) during reign of ASAF JAH VI, MIR MAHBUB ALI KHAN, from 1880 to 1920's.
