About and History Of Jayanthiramapuram


The Jayanthirampuram watershed is located in the western part of the Guntur district, in between latitude 16”27’ longitude 79” 2’ at Bollapalli Mandal and it is 20 Km from Karempudi town and 110 Km from district head quarters. The watershed drains joins in Naguleru through Lakhsmakka chervu located outside of the watershed.  Jayanthirampuram   watershed area belongs to the Mellavagu Revenue village of Bollapalli Mandal in Guntur district The watershed area consists of 646 families with a population of 1018.  Out of the total population 90% of them are land less and small and marginal farmers. The community is backward both socially and economically.

 

The upper ridge of Jayanthirampuram  watershed area is undulated with multiple slopes resulting in heavy soil erosion evident by steep gullies in private and public lands. The average annual rainfall of watershed area is 700 mm.    Three tanks are in existence in watershed area which are being used only for water storage.  Water has not been utilize for irrigation purpose.  The rainwater flows towards E- W direction and passes through a common outlet that joins in Naguleru Vagu that joins in Gundlakamma.  The ridge-line passes on the hill rocks and upland areas in the Northern and Eastern borders.  The main crops of the watershed area are Cotton, Red Gram, Caster, Chilly, Tobacco and Subabul.  These are all rain fed crops. The total area of watershed is 620 ha. The entire land belongs to farmers of Jayanthirampuram and Venkatareddypuram villages.  An area of 63.86 ha of land for treatment under Capacity Building Phase (CBP) has been delineated.  Treatment of remaining 556.14 ha are in plan under FIP as per data sheet.  According to actual survey Fip treatment are is 574.53 ha.

  SIRD as a PFA has been facilitating the watershed activities in CBP area since 14 months. SIRD submitted the preparation budget proposal for FSR plan to NA BARD and the same was sanctioned on 09.12.2009. The PFA initiated preparation of FSR plan on 1-1-2010 and completed on 24/04/2010.   Six numbers personnel of PFA, two consultants, 5 committee members, 2 supervisors and 324 farmers participated in the process of preparation of the FSR plan.  During the preparation of FSR plan two gramsabhas, three training programmes, four committee meetings and 459 field visits (person days) were organized. RSO team had visited watershed area 10 times  during the FSR plan  preparation and extended necessary support and technical guidance. 

FSR plan has prepared by considering the resources, livelihood needs, potential for development and to upgrade the productivity. The activities taken up in CBP area and its impact help out the PFA and committee members in mobilization of the farmers in FSR planning.  Majority of the farmers were very enthusiastic to participate during the planning of activities in their respective fields. The planning team of PFA had spend sufficient time to understand the natural resources, human resources, live stock and forest resources available in the watershed. The team had prepared a detailed note on the resources like land, water and people living in watershed. Different tools and methods as suggested by NA BARD have been applied for collection of information, assessment, and preparation of action plan. 

SIRD has adopted several social methods and involved all the stakeholders in the process such as community, landless farmers, gram panchayat, W DC, Sh Gs, Common Interest Groups, etc.,  The collected data, analysis reports and proposed activities are given in the subsequent chapters in this report.
