Pillur is referred to in Sthalapursnanam as "Thila Dharpanapuri" which, in other words, means a place considered holy for performing rituals to the manes or pithrus. There is yet another interesting anecdote about this place. Once, due to the curse inflicted upon Goddess Parvathi Devi by none other than Lord Shiva, she transformed herself into a cow. Lord Vishnu, Her beloved Brother, also followed as Her caretaker (cowherd). The cow was grazing and wandering from place to place when it happened to pass through Pillur (in Thanjavur district). Pillur was earlier in Thanjavur dist. And people in those days used to pronounce "pill" for grass. To lend credence to this incidence, there is Thiruvavaduthurai which implies that cow used to frequent this for quenching it's thirst.2. Pillur was once virtually under the control of Pillur Sellatthammal who was like a Queen herself. Many hearsay tales are being told about her. Valour and administration.3. Sivan temple is very famous and so also, Dharma Shastha (Ayyanar) temple. Many panchaloka idols had been stolen from Shiva temple earlier as there was no foolproof system in place. There used to be a Mahua tree earlier. A pond also used to exist. It is narrated that Shastha was kicking the ball made of flowers and by the dusk, where it falls will be His shelter for his night halt. It is further said that before proceeding finally to Sabharimala, He passed through Sirkazhi and Anada Thandavapuram where He performed his dance in ecstasy.4. Lord Vishnu temple on the western side is also a very famous temple. Earlier, there was a priest and pooja was regularly performed. From Thevur, Mariamman idol used to be taken in procession and will also be taken around Pillur. I hope and trust the above stodgy data would suffice. And also the famous Sri Maha mariyaman kovil it was 2nd big temple in Pillur it is kuladevivam to keelanatham thriru.
