Agriculture
is the main occupation of the people of shedol. It is a big village it comes under
nilanga taluk in the district of latur in maharashtra state in india. Shedols
road distance from its taluka & district are 18 & 35 km respectively. It
is situated 5 km away from national highway 9. Agriculture is the main
occupation of the people of shedol. The pouplation of shedol is more then 5000.
Shedol is having all kinds of people such as priests, washer men, fishermen,
milkmen, oilmen, carpenters, weavers, plumbers, barbers, pot makers, welders,
shoe makers, gold smith, copper smith, iron smith, gardeners, bamboo basket
makers, stone cutters, masons, transporters, grocers, tailors, painters,
electricians, cloth and fruit venders etc. The youths of village are well
educated [like-ba, bcom, bsc, b.sc.c.s., bca, diploma holders (polytechnic, iti
& agri courses), engineers, mba, doctors, pharmaciests, and class-2
officer's]. The
people of shedol celebrate a lot of festivals throughout the year. The main
celebrations are ganesh utsav, shiv-jayanti, druga puja, dussera, darsh vela
aamvsya (house wives prepare special dishes for this festival, the people goes
to their farm and they lunch in groups all together), diwali, holi,
parties from outside are invited to perform pola (festival of cattles
especially of oxen], and jatra (fair). There are several facilities in shedol
such as a primary school, a high school, a post-office, internet and a library
the office of village panchayat, government hospital, private clinics, buses
& private vehicals to travel. There are 5 ponds and one big pond in shedol.
Few of them go dry by the mid summer. In
shedol there are 6 temples viz. Shri ram mandir, hanuman mandir, aatmaram baba
mandir, vitthal rukmai mandir, aai (tulja bhavani / mata) mandir and balepir
temple. All the temples are not having kalash (gold / silver bowl) on it. There
is a story for that- before long time one saint named atmarambaba came to the
village shedol and he was doing tap-jap under ground. Before going inside the
tomb (cellar / burriel chamber) he informed all the people nearby that dont
open the door and do not disturb me while doing jap/tap (praying god). However
few of the people didn't take it seriously and opened the door of chamber after
few days. They saw the saint was doing jap by sitting (in padmasan position)
got enraged and accursed said no one in this village will grow up in wealth
(richest person). After certain level he/she will come down and there should
not be any kalash to the temples in this village. If someone ignore this and
puts it on temple then village will be in trouble. Since then there is no
kalash to all the temples (including the saints temple- aatmaram baba mandir). The
balepir temple is the unique one. The god is worshiped by mohmedian as well as
hindus. Every year on the occassion of gudhi padhava the festival is is there
for 3-4 days called balepir fair (balepir yatra). All the villagers from nearby
village as well as all the people of shedol come together and they all
celebrate the festival with joy and peace. The people of shedol organise 3-act
play (natak) every year in the fair for 3 days for that no fees to watch. On
the last day of fair the wrestling is there and participation is from small
school student to maharashtra kesari. Lot's of people ask to god (balepir) for
something they want and after getting what the asked for they do kanduri i.e.
Giving bali (chopping heads off) of of buck / billy (male goats). This temple
also not having temple bowl (kalash/dome). After 1993 there are lots of changes happened in the village
location. This is due to the earthquake on 30th september 1993 (3:56am). It was
a huge quake (6.4 on richter scate). Since then all the people of village left
their homes and settled in their own farms. After few months they planned to
gather and formed few small groups. So now the entire village is not at its
original location. It is separated into four parts one is located at west of
the village called as shriramnagar, shedol. And the rest two are at east and
south of main shedol village. The one which is at the south of village there is
a school and a junior collage called as maharashtra vidyalaya secondary and
higher secondary school. All the students of this school are not just from
shedol but they are also from other nearby villages viz. Yeli, kini (thot),
kini (navare), shedol-wadi, mugale-wadi etc. In the original village there is a school, zilla parishad primary scool.
Although the villager are located at four different parts due to quake the
entire village is called as shedol and for that only one gram-panchayat is
there and which is at main village shedol.
